So, it's just another self-appointed Cabal?

Yes and No. We are independent votetakers, which means that none of us are members of the UK Usenet Committee. We recruit from anyone who is interested and has sufficient time, energy and a little technical knowledge, but as we haven't been voted into office there is some justification in calling us a self-appointed cabal. However, whether elected votetakers is a good idea, I leave up to you with reference to the old Latin tag Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

So can I become a votetaker?

At this time UKVoting has no requirement for any more votetakers. But if you wish to be considered in the future please mail the address below.

We need several qualities in a votetaker, obviously a fair amount of spare time and a good deal of patience help but in addition we find the following are needed:

• You must have either a separate voting account or a way to make separate mail lists so that the votes are not mixed with your own personal mail. Or, if you can use a mail-filtering package such as procmail to effectively sort the votes into their own folders and avoid overwhelming your own mailbox, that may work depending on your own abilities.
• You must be willing and have the intention to be a neutral votetaker, not favouring any side in the vote. You must have a stronger interest in upholding the Guidelines (see below) than seeing any particular outcome. You must not accept the task of handling the vote for any topic which you would have an interest in voting.
• In terms of personal experience, you must have an understanding of the UK hierarchy voting process, usually indicated by having done the following:
  Read the Guidelines for Group Creation within the UK hierarchy (a.k.a. "The Guidelines").
  Read uk.net.news.config for about 2 months to become familiar with the volatility of the group.
• An understanding (not necessarily in depth) of how Network News and email work.
